Rug & Home Remodel Tips

Countless times a year we see rugs damaged and ruined by haphazard storage during a home remodel often and the results of moths, rodents, mold, and mildew damage. Prudent rug storage isn't hard, but there are some specific to protecting rugs in storage

Rug Cleaning

To clean or not to clean, that is the question.

Dirt, dust, and other debris accumulate on and in area rugs over time; by their nature, soils attract pests such as moths, resulting in a more hospitable home for moth larvae and moth damage. A dirty rug creates a better environment for microbial growth, such as bacteria, mold, and mildew.

Additionally, some stains and spills on rugs can change and oxidize and become difficult or even impossible to remove later on.

Get the rug out of the house; it might be time for rug cleaning anyway, and most rug cleaners can pick up, clean, and wrap your rug so it's clean and ready to use when you're ready.

Rug Appraisal

A rug appraisal is a professional assessment of a rug's condition, origin, age value, its worth in the current market or for replacement.

Do you need a formal rug appraisal?

Does your oriental rug have substantial-worth? We offer free verbal opinions on value; then, we suggest calling our insurance agent. Your insurance might cover your rug, or you may need supplemental insurance coverage such as a fine arts Ryder and a formal appraisal. This tends to be the driver of a written formal appraisal.

A common question: can you appraise a rug from photos? While we can identify and even age rugs from detailed images, some things affect the value we cannot determine from photographs alone.

Five Rules Of Rug Storage

-Never wrap wool rugs in plastic for extended periods, plastic traps moisture and will lead to mold and mildew growth. Wool rugs must breathe; air circulation is vital to maintain wool rugs and prevent damage.

-Always store rugs wrapped in breathable products such as cotton, paper, or Tyvek

-Never store rolled carpets or rugs on the floor;  always elevate off the floor and never in case of a water leak. Never store rugs rolled on concrete or tile floors. Cold concrete and tile floors pull moisture in rugs and can cause rugs to rot.

-Some rugs cannot be fooled; doing so may cause damage to the rug. Rolling is always preferred over folding to prevent creases. This is not true with all rugs; it's best to consult your rug professional.

-Avoid storing rugs in an area with wild swings in temperature and humidity, such as an attic or garage
