This Karabagh rugs come from the Karabagh region, a mountainous area straddling the border between the southern Caucasus and northwestern Persia — in what is today Azerbaijan and Armenia. Weavers in this region produced rugs for centuries, and the tradition reached its peak in the 18th and 19th centuries. This Karabagh rugs date to 1900-1920

What Makes Them Distinctive

Karabagh rugs occupy a fascinating middle ground between Caucasian tribal rugs and Persian court rugs, and that cross-cultural influence shows clearly in the designs. You'll find:

  • Bold floral patterns — large-scale blossoms, vines, and palmettes, sometimes described as having a "French" or European floral influence absorbed through trade
  • Geometric tribal motifs — medallions, latch-hook borders, and angular forms typical of Caucasian weaving
  • Highly saturated color palettes — deep indigos, rich reds, terracotta, gold, and ivory, often with striking high-contrast combinations
  • Natural dyes — vegetable and mineral-based, which give older pieces their characteristic warm, time-softened depth of color
