Antique Caucasian Shirvan Rug, Circa 1880–1900
Example of classic Shirvan village weaving from the eastern Caucasus, this antique rug commands attention with its deep indigo field and bold triple-diamond medallion composition — Its bold, iconic and sought-after Caucasian pile weaving.
The navy ground is alive with scattered tribal motifs between and around the three large lozenge medallions: stylized animals, birds, geometric rosettes, and abstract floral sprigs distributed with the confident spontaneity of a practiced hand working from tradition rather than pattern. Each diamond contains a constellation of eight-pointed stars in madder red, ivory, gold, and sage green — colors derived from natural dyes that have deepened and mellowed beautifully over more than a century.
The multiple-border system is characteristic of the Shirvan tradition at its finest: a bold outer guard of reciprocal triangles in brick red and ivory, a secondary running-star inner border on a cream ground, and narrow geometric filler bands between — each crisp and well-preserved, lending the composition an authoritative frame.
The rug presents with honest antique wear consistent with its age, including some low pile to the central field, which only serves to enhance its authenticity and patina. The borders retain excellent pile and the overall structure is sound and flat-lying.
